Roger D. Weld, March 24, 1938 – March 11, 2017

Roger was born March 24, 1938 in Goldfield Iowa. He was the first child of Vernon and Elsie Weld. Roger liked living in a small farm town and enjoyed the freedom to be able ride his bike from one end of town to the other in just a few minutes.

In 1951 after his parents had made a trip to the Pacific Northwest they announced the family would be moving to Astoria Oregon. Roger, having red hair and fair skin was relieved to be leaving the heat and humidity of the Midwest and welcomed the cooler temperatures of the Oregon Coast. It also began Roger’s love for the water.

Roger graduated from Astoria High School in 1956 and soon enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. After attending corpsman school in Connecticut he returned to Astoria and served as the ships “doc” on the USCGC Yocona and later on the Citrus out of Sitka. Roger loved the Coast Guard and the fact that they had both a peace time and war time mission. Though he only served four years active duty, he remained active in the reserves and retired at the age of 60.

In 1960 Roger married Lou Ellen Dye, they settled in the small town of Jefferson Oregon where they raised their children. Roger served on the local school board and as a church deacon.

Roger and Beverly Jenkins were married January 2, 1983 and soon after moved to Anchorage Alaska. Roger loved the beauty of Alaska and always thought they would live there “for the duration.” But in 2000 it was determined the winters were just too cold and dark and the decision was made to return to the lower 48. Roger and Bev settled in Olympia Washington where they were closer to family.

Nothing made Roger happier than being with his family. He enjoyed hearing what was going on in the lives of his children and grandchildren and offered his advise. He loved to teach practical skills to help them through life. Holidays and birthdays were great times for celebrating and making memories. A highlight of his life was when he took his grandsons, Tyler and Jacob on a road trip to Yellowstone Park and Mt. Rushmore.

Roger suffered a number of medical issues over the past few years but he always tried to have a positive attitude and a smile on his face. Our family is comforted by the fact that we know Roger is now pain free and with our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Roger passed away peacefully on March 11, 2017 with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife, Beverly, sister, Verdeen (Bill) Jackson and his children, Tami (Mike) Idsinga, Vicki Weld, Tim (Beth) Weld, Pam (Tony) Wagner, David (Keri) Weld, Lisa Hemperly and Chet (Heather) Jenkins. Twenty two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial Service will be Saturday, April 8 2017 at 1 :00 PM at Emmanuel Bible Fellowship, 2508 State Ave. NE, Olympia, WA 98506.

Interment, Saturday, May 6 2017 at 1:00 PM. Jefferson Cemetery, 615 N. 2nd St. Jefferson, Oregon 97352.
