He was comforted by family at the time of his passing. Born September 21, 1928 in Provo, UT, he was the youngest of six boys born to Glen and Orthelia Monk. The family also included six step-brothers and one stepsister. Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army January, 1949 and retired at Fort Lewis, after 20 years of honorable service. Jim was wounded in combat while serving in the Korean War and received two Purple Hearts. Jim was also stationed in Austria, Italy, Germany, South Korea, and stateside. Jim met and married his wife, Anna, in Vienna, Austria. Anna preceded Jim in death in 2006. Jim is survived by 2 children, Rick (Bobbi), and Joanne; 8 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. Jim also worked for the state of Washington until his final retirement. He was an active member of the Veterans Legislative Coalition, the Elks, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, First Cavalry Division Assoc., 796th MP Battalion Assoc., Capitol City Rifle and Pistol Club, and Capitol Wood Carvers Assoc. Jim enjoyed traveling, RVing, and fishing. He was a very accomplished wood carver. Jim was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. A graveside service with Military Honors will be held on July 11, 2014 at 11:00 a.m., at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 5930 Mullen RD SE, Lacey.
