Eugene O. Smith 95, was born in Waco, Texas on September 19, 1921 to Carlton and Ella Lee Smith. He was named Osborn Graves Smith and later added Eugene tot he front. His mother always called him “OG”. He grew up in Texas, Southern California, and Western Washington with his siblings Emily, who proceeded him in death, and Riley (Connie). Gene spent seven years in service to his country in the Unites States Army, Army Air Corp, Air Force, and Air Sea Rescue. This during and after World War II. He spent twenty-three years as a Radio and telecommunications technician for the Washington State Patrol working on their radio systems as well as other state agencies. Climbing the radio towers was not his favorite part of the job. He was very active in the Amateur Operators (HAMs) especially during the fifties and sixties. He loved to talk to people all over the world. Gene passed away Thursday, March 30, 2017 in Lacey, Washington. he was preceded by his wife Sally, and oldest daughter Judith Rose (Don) of Lacey. Gene is survived by his brother Riley (Connie) of Woodenville, Washington. His children Mark of Springfield, OR; Deborah Kernan of Redding, CA; George (Audrey) of Silver Springs, NV; Ward (Joanne) of Dayton, NV; and Etha of Blytheville, AK. Also survived by 17 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren. There will be a private family service. |
